The New High-Speed Train Project in Egypt: Implications on Travel and Trade

One of the most ambitious infrastructural projects that Egypt has embarked upon is the construction of a high-speed train network spanning 2,000 kilometres, valued at about $23 billion. Egypt high-speed train project, This high-speed network will consist of three rail lines powered by electricity and will connect the coast of the Mediterranean to the coast of the Red Sea, and will connect major cities, industrial areas, ports, and tourist places all over the country.
This railway network is called “Suez Canal on rails” and is expected to be one of the world’s largest high-speed train networks after completion of the project. Besides increasing efficiency and speed of travel, this train network will also serve the purpose of increasing the logistical ability of Egypt, improving freight transportation, and enhancing tourism.
A New Era of Trade and Logistics
One of the greatest benefits of the high-speed rail project is that it has a huge impact on the logistics industry of Egypt.
First of all, the railway will link industrial areas, mining areas, agricultural centers, and seaports into one system. Industrial centers like Abu Tartur, Qena, and Aswan will gain fast access to seaports located on the Mediterranean and Red Seas. Thus, transportation of products will be much easier.
According to government estimations, the annual tonnage of freight can grow from 4-5 million tons to 13 million tons, and freight capacity is expected to grow by 46%. It means that transportation will become cheaper and faster; as a result, Egypt will become more competitive as an exporter. The high-speed railway is connected with the idea of making Egypt a logistics center of the region.
Faster and Easier Domestic Travel
Passengers of the new railway will receive great advantages during their journeys inside Egypt.
Many routes that take more than ten hours through regular trains or roads are predicted to be shortened by more than half once the high-speed rail becomes fully functional. The increased speed will make business trips, tourism, and daily commuting easier for people.
This transportation route will finally link such large cities as Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, Ain Sokhna, Hurghada, Marsa Matrouh, as well as many new urban settlements created recently.
It is estimated that around 90 percent of the Egyptian population will have access to this rail transport, and the number of its passengers per year will exceed 500 million.
Furthermore, this rail will provide a more environmentally friendly transport option than roads by reducing traffic and pollution.
Development of Tourism and Regions
Another field that would benefit greatly from this development is tourism.
Egypt has numerous places of historical interest and beautiful resorts, which attract millions of tourists each year. High-speed rail linking Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, and Red Sea coast resorts can help tourists travel all over the country within one trip.
Moreover, it will facilitate movement to tourist destinations that were not accessible before, and that would bring additional income sources to the area through local businesses, hotels, restaurants, and tour operators.
Apart from tourism, the improved connection is anticipated to increase the level of investment in industrial parks and urban infrastructure projects located near the railway corridors.
Meaning of the Project for Egypt’s Future
Thus, the implementation of high-speed railway in Egypt should be perceived as a part of the nation’s economic development strategy.
Not only would the new railways reduce travel time and increase transportation capacity, but they would also make tourist destinations easier to reach and would create connections between industrial centers and ports.
With the construction process continuing in all three corridors, the high-speed rail project will become an essential element of the vision of Egypt as one of the main transportation and investment hubs in Africa.
