Erdogan and Trump Discuss Strengthening US-Turkey Ties in First Call Post-Election
On Wednesday evening President of Turkey Tayyip Erdogan spoke with US newly elected President Donald Trump over the phone call.
According to the Arab News, Turkish Presidency shared that Erdogan congratulated Trump on his election win
Both the leaders also discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between their countries during upcoming term of Trump.
This call by Erdogan indicates the signal and interest of Turkish government to strengthen ties with US, and remove the developed distance because of policies in Syria, military partnerships, and diplomatic disputes.
Turkey is also a ally of NATO, and because of it this nation shared a long defence and trade relationships with US. But because of its policies for middle east, it always faces tensions with the United States.
The telephonic conversation highlights that both the nations are interested in a new relationship as both nations have to play a major role during time of crisis, war and economic pressure . According to a regional news source in Middle East, “both nations playing pivotal roles in managing conflicts in the Middle East and addressing broader issues, such as the refugee crisis and counter-terrorism efforts.”
