Contentious Demands and Conflicting Positions

Demands presented by the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu have added intricacy to the negotiation process. The Israeli PM insists that Israel must retain control of the Philadelphi corridor, a strategic area along the border with Egypt, to avert the smuggling of weapons into Gaza. This perspective directly discords with Hamas’s condition that Israel must completely withdraw from Gaza territories following a ceasefire.

The discussion that was held in Doha, Qatar and Cairo, Egypt, involved several international mediators like Qatar, Egypt and the United States, aiming to secure a ceasefire and address the return of hostages held by Hamas.

The Toll of Conflict

On October 7 2023, a massive attack by Hamas on southern Israel that led to major fatalities and hostilities, initiating this war between Israel and Palestine. According to some media reports Israel claimed loss of 1,195 innocent lives and abduction of 251 hostages after the attack. On other hand Gaza’s health ministry claims, the ongoing reply from Israeli forces has resulted in at least 38,345 deaths in Gaza, where most of them are innocent civilians.

A Path to Peace

This proposal by Hamas for a non-partisan governance structure opens a potential path for the Palestinian territories, aimed to ensure local control and make the way for democratic proceedings. However, the success of this step relies on resolving the huge differences between the conflicting nations and securing an effective and long term ceasefire agreement.
