Yemen’s Houthis Threaten to Draw the Red Sea into Regional Instability

Houthis from Yemen are carrying out an increased military operation along the Red Sea and warning Saudi shipping vessels, while conducting missile and drone attacks against Yemen and Saudi Arabia targets.
Such activities have led to new doubts regarding Yemen’s truce and the safety of one of the busiest maritime routes of the world.
Houthi Red Sea, The latest activities have occurred in the wake of heightened tensions in the region due to events related to the Strait of Hormuz, which have raised concerns of further spreading of instability in other energy hubs.
What are the Houthis Doing in the Red Sea?
The Houthi movement has declared a maritime embargo on the ships linked to Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
According to the group, it is a retaliation move against the Saudi-led coalition and allegations of blockages and airstrike operations in northern Yemen.
The move has caused great concern in the shipping community, given that the Bab el-Mandeb is an essential passage route between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden as well as the Indian Ocean.
Disruption may lead to a need for ships to alter routes through the area, making journeys and the cost of transportation more expensive.
Houthi Missiles Attack Yemen’s Mokha Port
There has been a recent escalation in missile attacks that hit the government-held Red Sea port city of Mokha, which is alternatively spelled as Al-Makha.
Missile attacks from the Houthi movement using drones reportedly killed 11 civilians in and around the city and the port itself.
This is a huge escalation of the conflict since Mokha is an important coastal town held by forces opposing the Houthi movement.
Houthis have become accustomed to using drones and missiles to conduct their military operations and attack locations that are distant from their territories.
Saudi Energy Infrastructure Under Threat as Well
The escalation has spilled over beyond Yemen’s borders.
The Houthi group has taken credit for an attack on a Saudi Aramco oil refinery in Jizan, as Saudi-associated maritime and energy infrastructure have come under threat as well.
This is especially important considering the fact that Saudi Arabia had been using Red Sea infrastructure as an alternative route for some of its energy exports whenever there were disturbances somewhere else in the region.
The potential threat to Red Sea shipping routes might be yet another source of uncertainty in international energy markets.
Will Yemen Ceasefire Break Down?
Even though Yemen has witnessed calm after the signing of the ceasefire agreement in 2022 and the resulting reduction of clashes between the Houthi rebels and the factions that supported the internationally recognized government.
The ceasefire itself did not lead to the signing of a more detailed peace treaty.
The fact that attacks occur more frequently leads to a high likelihood of further military clashes in Yemen.
The Importance of the Red Sea for Global Trade
The Red Sea plays an important role in global trade as the water route that connects markets in the Mediterranean and Europe with those in the Indian Ocean and Asia.
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait is particularly important because the ships passing through the Suez Canal to the Indian Ocean must pass through the maritime bottleneck.
Therefore, an offensive by the Houthis aimed at the ships would have consequences far beyond the countries of Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
It could cause additional insurance rates for ships, delays in routes, and increased costs of security.
A More Broadly Regional Threat – Houthi Red Sea
The current situation is happening at an especially volatile time for the Middle East.
Concerns over the security of global energy supplies due to tension near the Strait of Hormuz have already been heightened. Escalation near the Red Sea might then add to the problems in another major maritime channel at the same time.
