Houthi Threat to Red Sea Shipping Reappears as the Iran-Hormuz Crisis Worsens

The security situation in the Red Sea area is worsening due to increased threats to commercial shipping operations from Yemen’s Houthi movement amidst the Iran-Hormuz crisis.
Houthi threat, The renewed threats have raised concerns over the possibility of both the Red Sea and the Hormuz Strait being affected at the same time and creating havoc on energy supply lines and shipping routes.
This development has come in the wake of the announcement made by the Houthis that they will be imposing a maritime blockade against vessels linked with Saudi Arabia. They have also conducted missile attacks resulting in fatalities of commercial shipping vessels.
Attack on Commercial Shipping
The most serious incident was the strike on the Egyptian-owned Tanzanian-flagged vessel called Tihamah.
These fatalities were experienced in the crew and in the rescue team due to the increased dangers that now threaten the commercial vessels sailing through the Red Sea passage.
Bab al-Mandeb is crucial in that it links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden as well as offering access to the Suez Canal. Any disruption will mean that ships have to use other passages around Africa, hence increased fuel consumption, insurance expenses, and increased transit time.
Hormuz Crisis Raises Additional Concerns
This Red Sea challenge has developed amid continued disruptions for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
This strait is considered one of the most strategic energy passages in the world and carries a good portion of international energy shipments. The restrictions on the movement of vessels and the drone and mine attacks have greatly slowed down traffic at the strait.
Together, these two present a great challenge to international trade.
In case the Hormuz passage and the Red Sea-Suez passage become unsafe for shipping activities, there would not be many options left for energy exporting and importing countries as well as shippers.
Increased Saudi Efforts Against Houthi Maritime Threats
Another state that has increased its maritime security measures in response to the escalating attacks by the Houthis is Saudi Arabia.
The kingdom has sought a wider security partnership at sea between Saudi Arabia and foreign states in light of the possibility that the crisis may extend from individual attacks to pose an extended danger to commercial vessels.
It is a matter of concern for shipping firms as vessels might be able to use the route but would face risks such as missiles, drones, mines, and insurance issues, which would make another route more appealing for their purposes.
Risks of Further Conflict in Yemen
The maritime escalation poses a further threat to Yemen’s volatile politics.
Although the Houthis have been contained by various states and international organizations for many years, an offensive against commercial shipping will prompt them to retaliate and destroy the fragile truce in Yemen.
The UN has issued warnings about the possibility of increasing the crisis in Yemen as well as in the maritime realm in terms of international commerce.

It is all dependent on how things will evolve: whether the attacks will be confined to specific ships or escalate to become a wider war against the shipping industry.
The implications are likely to go far beyond Yemen and the region, with higher insurance rates, longer shipping routes, and higher energy prices adding to inflation levels in various parts of the world.
Given the increasing risks associated with Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb passages, all stakeholders are keeping a close eye on possible escalation.
The more the two scenarios persist, the more likely it becomes that the regional security conflict might end up becoming a much wider global trade crisis.
