Red Bull Racing is in unknown waters as the Formula One giant battles with performance problems accumulating after another calamitous weekend at the Bahrain Grand Prix. The reigning team in F1 is no longer able to answer the pressing questions about their future in F1 competitiveness.

Max Verstappen finished sixth in the Bahrain Grand Prix and the news rocked the Formula 1 paddock as the three times world champion was over thirty seconds behind the race leader. The development represents an ignoble decline in fortune to Red Bull F1 team that has made its name on its reliability to dominate the position of front runners.

The difficulties of the Austrian team were already evident in the first qualifying session at the weekend in Bahrain with persistent problems of overall car balance affecting both Verstappen and his teammate Sergio Perez. The RB21 car was very inconsistent; a week ago, when the cooler Japanese weather was at play, the car performed well but in the adversity of Bahrain, it miscarried disastrously.

In addition to the handling issues of the car, Red Bull F1 team also faced a lot of technical failures bringing to the fore more organizational problematic issues. The brake system is something that both drivers were having issues with during the weekend itself, as Verstappen suggested that he had no winner and bite during important sections of the races.

The failure of the automated traffic lights system twice sent the wrong signals to drivers that their wheel changes exercise had already been completed due to a suspected wiring fault at the pit gantry. These errors of operation make Red Bull F1 team even worse on the performance related matters.

Team Principal Christian Horner acting had emergency meetings with main technical components immediately after the Bahrain fiasco. Technical director Pierre Wache, chief engineer Paul Monaghan and advisor Helmut Marko involved themselves in close post race debates in order to come up with solutions to the rising issues at Red bull F1 team.

The hotness of these talks is indicative of the worry that the top management of Red Bull are facing concerning the competitive path of the team. As ground-effect regulations are entering their maturity stage, performance improvements are becoming harder and harder to find by teams, especially under these circumstances when there is a problematic basic car behaviour at hand.

The most worrying in the future of the Red Bull F1 team may be the fact that they do not know how to simulate the problematic behavior of the car correctly. This is a great drawback to the development work of the team because engineers do not have an opportunity to adequately test the possible solutions before they apply them to the track.

The disconnection between that simulation and reality perhaps indicates that the Red Bull F1 team is contending with either aerodynamic or mechanical phenomena that their existing capabilities in model building cannot accommodate. Such a blind spot in technology may prove disastrous to any kind of performance recovery since the traditional means of development will not be apt.
