Sudan Facing Crisis: UN Warns of Famine and Chaos
As famine slowly spreads and violence intensifies Sudan is staring into the abyss, with millions in desperate need of help. The United Nations has raised the alarm warning that catastrophe would strike the nation as an outcome of delay in response.
The current war between Sudan’s army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and paramilitary commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo of the Rapid Support Forces has plunged the nation into chaos since April 2023. Over 600,000 are already ‘on the brink of starvation’ and famine has enveloped five areas, including North Darfur’s Zamzam refugee camp. The UN believes that the crisis may escalate, with five more areas likely to face famine in the next few months.
The humanitarian crisis is worsened because the UN estimates that more than 30 million people require urgent assistance, including food and healthcare. The conflict has displaced over 12 million individuals and it is objectively considered the largest displacement crisis worldwide. The healthcare system is collapsing, with less than 30 percent of hospitals in operation. Meanwhile, cholera spreads rapidly, killing people throughout the whole country.
The UN requested immediate action to stop the war, provide emergency supplies and restore the agricultural capacity of Sudan. Sudan risks falling into a spiral of further chaos without intervention, incurring mass deaths and widespread suffering.
