More than three years into Sudan’s civil war, the numbers are almost too large to take in. Sudan war humanitarian crisis, Nearly 19.5 million people don’t know where their next meal is coming from. It’s easy for statistics like these to become background noise. But behind each one is someone who used to have a home, a routine, a sense of safety, all of it gone now.
How It Started, and Why It Won’t Stop
The war broke out in April 2023, when Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces turned on each other. What followed was a slow-motion unravelling: markets burned, hospitals shuttered, entire neighbourhoods emptied out as people ran. For a lot of families, this isn’t even their first time fleeing. WFP’s Carl Skau spent eight days in Sudan recently and came back with stories that capture just how relentless this has become. He met people who’d been living in displacement for years, right alongside others who’d arrived at camps only days before, having walked for days just to get somewhere they felt was safe.
Hunger That Goes Deeper Than a Lack of Food
What’s striking is that the hunger crisis isn’t just about food running out. It’s about a broken system, farms abandoned in the fighting, roads too dangerous to move goods on, aid trucks unable to reach the people who need them most.
A joint assessment by the FAO and WFP back in June flagged 14 areas at risk of famine, with that danger expected to linger into early 2027 in some places. And the group hit hardest, as always in situations like this, is children. WFP estimates that over 800,000 kids under five could face severe malnutrition this year alone.
Aid Groups Are Running Out of Road
Here’s the cruel irony: as needs grow, the money to meet them is shrinking. WFP’s Sudan budget has been slashed from $645 million down to around $206 million, and they say they still need close to $300 million more just to keep current operations running, not to expand them, just to keep the lights on. Even the aid that does get moving isn’t safe. In late August, an airstrike hit two WFP trucks near Dilling, destroying over 50 tons of food, enough to have fed nearly 6,000 people for a month. Gone in an instant.
More Than a Food Crisis
Step back, and you can see the war eating away at everything that holds a society together: markets, cash flow, basic infrastructure. Health systems are barely functioning; around 40% of facilities are out of commission, and clean water is out of reach for millions. That combination is a recipe for disease outbreaks on top of everything else.
The pain doesn’t stop at Sudan’s borders, either. Huge numbers of people have fled into neighbouring countries, straining aid systems that were already stretched thin before Sudan’s crisis added to the load. But for families still inside the country, none of this is abstract. It’s about whether there’s food for the kids tonight, whether the area is safe enough to sleep in, and whether help will actually show up before it’s too late. Aid organisations keep warning that whatever progress has been made against hunger could unravel fast if funding keeps drying up and the fighting keeps going. Ending the war and getting aid workers safe access to the people who need them isn’t just a policy goal at this point; it’s the difference between survival and catastrophe for millions of people.
