The world’s best restaurant for 2024 revealed
The European nation had six restaurants on the list, including three in the top five.
The awards, billed as the Oscars of world gastronomy, were handed out at a ceremony at the Wynn in Las Vegas on Wednesday evening, with Barcelona’s Disfrutar taking the top prize. Runner-up last year, it is run by chefs Oriol Castro, Eduard Xatruch and Mateu Casanas.
Given that this trio met while working at the legendary El Bulli, it’s likely that they’ll have some clues as to what diners can expect: imaginative and playful dishes executed with great technical skill, such as the caviar-filled Panchino doughnut, the glazed gazpacho sandwich and the squab with kombu spaghetti, almonds and raisins.
In second place is Asador Etxebarri in Atxondo, not far from the Spanish port city of Bilbao. Helmed by chef Victor Arguinzoniz, this establishment is renowned for its unbeatable grills, which showcase the quality of the ingredients, such as the Palamós red shrimp, simply grilled and served on its own.
However, Paris is not to be outdone. The Table by Bruno Verjus restaurant in the French capital came third, while another Spanish restaurant, Diverxo in Madrid, took fourth place.
One of three restaurants in the city to make the list, Lima’s Maido, took fifth place, further cementing the Peruvian capital’s reputation as South America’s leading gastronomic destination. In North America, Mexico was the big winner, with three restaurants on the list, including Quintonil in Mexico City, which came seventh.
Rest of the list
Spain was the biggest winner of the evening in Las Vegas, with six restaurants on the list. In terms of cities, Paris and Bangkok tied for first place, with four restaurants each on the list. Gaggan Anand, in ninth place, was the best restaurant in the Thai capital.
The host country of the event, the United States, has two restaurants on this year’s 50 Best list.
New York’s Atomix came 6th this year, moving up two places from last year. SingleThread, located in the town of Healdsburg in California’s Sonoma Valley, came 47th.
Tokyo saw three restaurants rewarded, with Sézanne (voted best restaurant in Asia in 2024) ranking highest in the Japanese capital, in 15th place.
In Hong Kong, two restaurants made the list, both having made impressive progress. Wing is the city’s highest-ranking newcomer on the list as a whole, in 20th place, while The Chairman has made the most progress, rising from last year’s 50th place to 26th.
This list is based on votes cast by the Academy of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, made up of 1,080 international restaurant experts, including food writers and chefs, from 27 regions around the world.
