Turkey Introduces New Electricity Tariffs for 2025: All You Need to Know
With the regulation effective from January 1st 2025, high electricity consumers will pay higher bills starting from February. So how will the new electricity bill regulation work? Who will pay more?
A new era for electricity bills begins on January 1st 2025. Under the new regulation, a monthly consumption of 417 kWh will be the limit for subscribers. Consumption exceeding this limit will incur “non-subsidized real costs.” As a result, high electricity consumers will see increased bills starting in February.
What will the new limit for electricity tariffs be?
In the new system starting January 1st households with an average consumption of 200-300 kWh per month will not see any change in their bills. The high bill threshold will start at an annual usage of 5,000 kWh equivalent to 417 kWh per month. Consumers exceeding this threshold will face higher bills.
Which bills will fall into the upper tier?
Households paying electricity bills exceeding 1,050 TL and businesses paying more than 5,000 TL will move into the upper tier. Under the new regulation, bills for average consumption (300-400 TL) will remain the same but a high-consumption household paying 1,050 TL could see their bill rise to 2,000 TL.
How many consumers will be affected?
The new model will not impact 97% of subscribers while the 3% representing high consumption households approximately 1.2 million will pay the actual cost of electricity. This change will eliminate nearly 50 billion TL in Treasury subsidies.
What about seasonal high electricity use?
The regulation sets an annual usage threshold of 5,000 kWh. For consumers using devices like air conditioners heavily in summer, total yearly consumption will determine the impact.
Does the regulation apply only to households?
The limit applies not only to individual household consumption but also to shared spaces in apartment buildings, such as independent units, heating systems, elevators, water pumps, stairwell lighting, and caretaker quarters with separate meters.
Is it possible to secure cheaper electricity?
Households paying more than 1,000 TL can reduce their electricity bill burden by signing a free consumer agreement with electricity companies and switching to a more favorable tariff. Subscribers can enter such agreements by January 5 for the February billing cycle.
Are there any exemptions to the regulation?
Certain places such as mosques, cemevis and AFAD accommodation centers are excluded from the new regulation.
