‘We Can’t Let Putin Win’: US, UK Pushed Ukraine to War

Ukrainian MP David Arakhamia recently expressed frustration over lack of mediation and peace talks to enable Russia and Ukraine truce. The Russian invasion could have ended sooner if Ukraine’s allies would have stepped up dialogue.

But the Western allies pushed Ukraine further and deeper into war given Kyiv’s lack of trust in Russia. Arakhamia, who led Ukraine at the Turkey-mediated peace talks with Russia in 2022, had said the peace deal could only be done if there were security guarantees. He suggested that negotiations could have borne fruit had they received the support and involvement of NATO states.

The Ukrainian politician said the Western allies advised Kyiv not to agree to ephemeral security guarantees. Arakhamia highlighted that Boris Johnson, the then UK prime minister, had advised Ukraine to reject a truce and make war instead. According to a Ukrainian media outlet, Johnson told President Volodymyr Zelensky the West wouldn’t support any peace deal regardless of what Ukraine wanted.

US to Keep Ukraine in War

The US president Joe Biden told Reuters that if Vladimir Putin takes Ukraine, the Kremlin will not stop there. “Putin will attack a NATO ally and then we’ll have something that we don’t seek and that we don’t have today – American troops fighting Russian troops. We can’t let Putin win.”

To prevent this, Biden is urging Republicans for a fresh tranche of military aid for Ukraine. He warned that a victory for Russia in Ukraine would strengthen Moscow to such an extent that it would not hesitate to attack NATO allies and draw US troops into war.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said the US will maintain its long-held position to not pressure Ukraine into negotiations with Russia. “That’s going to have to be up to them. We’re just going to keep fighting day in and day out to try to secure this money.” Biden added that US allies are prepared to continue supporting Ukraine to repel Russian invaders.

Ukraine is West’s Battleground

Sergei Naryshkin, head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), said the West is likely to turn Ukraine into a second Vietnam. He believes Ukraine will turn into a black hole absorbing more and more resources and people. “Ultimately, the US risks creating a second Vietnam for itself and every new American administration will have to try to deal with it.”

Aleksey Arestovich, a former adviser to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, says Ukraine should negotiate as the situation looks more hopeless on the frontline. He believes Zelenksy has become a hostage to his own propaganda – to play the hero in parliaments around the world.

Arestovich pointed out that Ukraine was in a far stronger position to negotiate in spring 2022 when Russia’s troops were closer to Kiev, but the then UK prime minister undermined the peace talks. Talks were terminated.
