WHO warns about the new Covid-19 variant

South Africa South AfricaA new Covid-19 variant has been detected in South Africa raising concerns about the safety of people until details about its impact are known. On Friday, global authorities warned nations about the new coronavirus variant.

They have asked Europe and Britain to tighten their borders as per the history of the variant goes, it will not take much to spread the virus from one country to the other. The researchers are currently gathering data on vaccine resistance towards the variant and till that happens the World Health Organization has cautioned against hasty travel bans.

Britain was quick to impose a ban on flights from South Africa and neighbouring countries and they also asked the travellers to return from three to quarantine. Talking about the same, the head of the UN World Tourism Organisation asked for quick responses from the government.

Zurab Pololikashvili, chief of the organisation sais, “It depends on WHO recommendations, but my recommendation will be to take decisions today, not after one week, because if it continues to spread as we are expecting then it will be late and will make no sense to apply restrictions.”

Soon after Britain announced bane on flights from South Africa, a scientist from South Africa said that this is a symptom of ‘vaccine aparthied’. The European Union also asked other countries like India, Japan and Israel to stress on the Covid-19 curbs.

“It is now important that all of us in Europe act very swiftly, decisively and united,” von der Leyen said. She said that these countries should make sure that all the air travels in and out should immediately be suspended if they want to prevent the cariant from attacking their land.
