Israel IsraelThe Israeli government on Sunday approved a $317 million plan to double the number of Jewish settlers in the Golan Heights, 40 years after it annexed land it captured from Syria.

The government of Israeli Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett, voted in favor of the plan, which aims to build 7,300 homes for settlers in the area over a five-year period, during a meeting in the Golan town of Mevo Hama.

The plan calls for 1 billion Israeli shekels to be spent on housing, infrastructure and other projects with the goal of attracting nearly 23,000 new Jewish settlers to the area, which Israel captured in the 1967 war. ‘Our goal today is to double the population of the Golan Heights,’ Bennett, a right-winger, said before the meeting.

The Israeli prime minister was forced to leave the meeting after his 14-year-old daughter tested positive for the coronavirus, forcing him to enter a period of home isolation, but the vote on the program took place.
