Anti-regime protests in Iran spread with calls for cheaper food and change in rule

Iran Iran– On Friday, more parts of Iran were engulfed in rising protests by the civilians who came down on the streets demanding reinstating of food subsidies by the government. Since earlier this week there has been surge in food prices making life of Iranians difficult.

Rising protests against the regime

Videos are making rounds on social media of protests showing demonstrators shouting slogans against the Iranian regime. Two separate incident videos show the protesters attacking offices of Basij paramilitary militia.

It is as if the people of Iran are no more afraid of retribution by security services of Iran as they shout “Death to Khamenei! Death to Raisi!” slogans. The reference is to newly elected President Ebrahim Raisi who had promised lift sanctions, more jobs and uplifted economy.

Lisa Daftari, an expert on Iran and editor-in-chief of the news website The Foreign Desk, has said that the protests in Iran have spread to over 31 provinces of the country including Khuzestan, Lorestan, Kurdistan, Isfahan, Kermanshah, Hamedan, Sistan, Rasht, Azerbaijan, Chaharmahal Bakhtiari and Shahrekord and Ardabil.

Daftari said, “In the past decade the Iranian people have done a wonderful job acting as citizen journalists to tell the world what the true plight of the Iranian people is, and how misrepresented their regime is in the mainstream media. While the Biden administration, similar to the Obama administration, is busy obfuscating the facts about a brutal and repressive regime that is not interested in changing its ways, the people of Iran are suffering. Protests are both economic and social in nature

Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD) said, “It would be yet another mistake to view these protests as isolated or merely economic. They are part of a growing trend of anti-regime protests that use social, economic, and environment matters to make claims about their desire for responsible and representative government.”

Rising food prices increasing public agony

Iranian regime has abruptly raised food prices by as much as 300% of staples like cooking oil, eggs, chicken and milk. This development on Thursday has triggered the public agony.
