Rebels named Mohammed Al-Bashir as “the new Syrian prime minister”
President Bashar al-Assad fled the nation after the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) carried out a quick attack on Sunday to seize the capital, Damascus. Mohammad al-Bashir has been chosen by the Syrian rebels who now control Damascus as the leader of a transitional government that will remain in office until March 1, according to state media on Tuesday.
“The general command has tasked us with running the transitional government until March 1,” stated a statement on state television’s Telegram account which gave credit to Bashir by calling him “the new Syrian prime minister”.
This decision was made when HTS leader Abu Mohammad al-Jolani met with outgoing Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Jalali and Vice President Faisal Mekdad on Monday to negotiate a transitional administration.
He previously worked as the development minister of the rebel’s so-called Salvation Government in northwest Syria before being appointed to this position. Additionally on Tuesday, a source in the Salvation Government’s political affairs division informed media that Bashir would lead the transitional administration.
In order to help those in the rebel held area who were cut off from government services, the Salvation Government was established in the Idlib stronghold in 2017 and has its own ministries, departments, judicial and security authority. Since then it has started to provide aid in Aleppo, the first significant city to be taken from the government following the start of the rebel offensive.
