Jordan Boosts Gas Supplies to Syria Through Regional Partnership

Jordan has revealed intentions of enhancing the amount of natural gas supply to Syria by using the triangle cooperation program with Egypt and Qatar, which is a critical measure towards regional energy integration. The project is part of additional plans to stabilize the energy sector of the Syrian state and to increase bilateral relations between the bordering countries.

In high-level talks held in Amman, the Jordanian Ministry of Energy’s Saleh Kharabsheh confessed that the kingdom facilitated the transfer of natural gas from Qatar to Syria through the Arab Gas Pipeline since efforts to coordinate had begun. 

The partnership not only involves transfers of gas but also follows a broad involvement concerning energy infrastructure development. According to the Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad Bashir, the expanded gas supplies are of critical importance regarding the continuous energy problems facing his country and subsequent efforts to bring it back on its economic feet.

Infrastructure Modernization Program Announced 

The countries also agreed to redevelop their joint electric infrastructure as part of the cooperation. The capacity of the Jordan-Syria interconnection power transmission will also be upgraded to 300 megawatts (20 percent growth in the ability to transmit power between the two states).

The infrastructure rehabilitation program will be funded by the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development and the International Monetary Fund. This global assistance highlights the local importance of the Jordan-Syria energy alliance and the possibility of utilizing it as an early initiative in greater Middle Eastern cooperation.

The rehabilitation work of the transmission lines will also be aimed at enhancing the stability of the grid and minimizing the energy losses towards a more efficient distribution of power to the two countries. The technical advancements are likely to improve the energy security as well as help to cut the operational cost of the two nations.

Renewable Energy Investment Drive

The presence of the private sector is becoming important in developing clean energy projects in the two territories. The renewable energy investment will be carried out in Syria, which is the trend in sustainability globally and environmental obligations in the region. The signing of new agreements during the ministerial discussions will make this possible.

The renewable energy sector of the cooperation system is an indication of the realization by both nations that they require diversification of their energy resources. Jordan, about his knowledge in operating an electricity distribution system and petroleum products, has captured the interest of the Syrians in Knowledge transfer and technical cooperation.

There has been an elaborate joint plan of action to facilitate the technical and strategic cooperation process in the forthcoming months, in order to be systematic in the implementation of what has been agreed.

In addition to energy cooperation, the bilateral talks addressed the topical problem of water resources control between the states. The falling of waters in the Yarmouk River basin and the Wihdeh dam have triggered rapid intercontinental cooperation between the Jordanian and the Syrian governments.

The water and Irrigation Minister, Raed Abul Saud, revealed that a technical committee will be set up to revise the 1987 water-sharing agreement. This committee will discuss the required resolutions that are needed to be undertaken to consider some actual of environmental and demographic situations to address the water supply.
