Egypt Urges Swift Implementation of Gaza Ceasefire Deal Over Diplomatic Push

Egypt’s chief diplomat Badr Abdelatty said a ceasefire has been agreed on for Gaza, and both Israel and Hamas should proceed with it “as soon as possible”. The signed agreement reached following intensive efforts of American, Qatari and Egyptian mediators, comes over the conflict of the 15-year-old.

Addressing from The New Administrative Capital last Wednesday, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egyptian intention to increase facilitation for humanitarian aid with intent to increase the number of trucks to 600 a day across Rafah border crossing. The agreement provides for reopening of the crossing to EU civilian observers where an EU mission is expected to arrive in Cairo next week. On the other hand, the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who at first dismissed the existence of the deal now seems to warm up to it – Israel says that the deal can come into operation by Sunday.

The Egyptian foreign minister also discussed the consequences for the stability of the region, adding that due to Houthi’s attacks on the Suez Canal, the Egyptian economy loses 600 million dollars per month. Also, he has also focused on the fact that Palestinian Authority should be strengthened in the reconstruction of Gaza after the war for the independence of Palestinian state.
