Is Egypt’s Energy Security Under Threat? Insights into Damietta Port Drone Attack

The Egyptian authorities are now investigating an alleged drone attack on Damietta Port, one of the most significant liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals in the country, located in the Mediterranean Sea. This drone attack took place on two ships in Damietta Port: the FSRU vessel Energos Winter, owned by the U.S., and the LNG ship GasLog Salem, owned by Greece.
What Happened at Damietta Port?
The incident reportedly took place on July 29, 2026, when suspected drones attacked the two vessels while they were working at Damietta Port.
The explosions caused fires aboard both the ships; however, emergency crews soon managed to contain the fire. The Egyptian authorities stated that no casualties had been reported following the explosion. As a result, the port operation did not stop due to emergency inspection.
After the event, both Energos Winter and GasLog Salem moved offshore as an investigation started.
To date, nobody has taken responsibility for the attack, and the Egyptian authorities did not name any suspects publicly.

Damietta is one of the most strategically important facilities in terms of energy in Egypt.
The Mediterranean port plays a critical role in the import and processing of liquefied natural gas as well as the production of electricity in Egypt and the export of energy to other countries.
