On Monday, King Abdullah II of Jordan and Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Jordan railway project, laid the foundation stone of the $2.5 billion railway in Jordan. Formally known as the Aqaba-Maan railway project, it is a 403-kilometer long railway that represents the single largest logistics infrastructure investment in the history of the kingdom.

A Historic UAE-Jordan Strategic Partnership

The railway project is being undertaken by a newly established company called the Jordan-UAE Railway Company, which is investing in the initiative with help from the UAE’s national railway company, Etihad Rail. As per the project plans, the railway will comprise around 55 bridges and six tunnels cut through southern Jordan’s rough desert.

The new UAE-Jordan railway connects the port of Aqaba with mineral deposits in Al-Shidiya and the Maan Logistics Zone to make a complete freight corridor in Jordan. The Gulf News say it is meant to transport bulk cargo by connecting both production centers in this country, as well as shipping.

Slashing Export Costs and Generating 5,000 Jobs

The potential economic impact of this infrastructure project is beyond comprehension. When the railway is operational, its capacity to transport 16 million tons of phosphate and potash every year comes as a real breakthrough.

According to Arabian Business, migrating the large amounts of heavy minerals from conventional trucking to a new rail system will cut transportation costs by nearly $40 million annually. Moreover, it will significantly reduce traffic congestion and infrastructure stress on the roads across Jordan’s current highway system while minimizing the industrial carbon footprint.
