Resolving the Public Sector Pay Crisis – Libya unified salary scale

As reported by the Libyan News Agency (LANA), Dbeibah announced the decision of a wide-ranging reform after an emergency session with the General Union of Teachers of Libya. This is the first government restructuring of the remuneration of the employees who are under the state control of the Government of National Unity (GNU). The Government of National Unity through the Ministry of Finance undertakes a fiscal reform in the sphere of salaries that will put an end to pay differences among the government workers.

Suspension of the Nationwide Teachers’ Strike

There is a long-awaited rollout of the reform which started due to the strike organized by public schools. As it was stated by the Africanews, teachers in different parts of the country suspended classes last week protesting because of the low salaries which vary between 1,000 and 2,500 Libyan dinars.

Following the announcement of the Prime Minister’s promised October pay plan, the General Union of Teachers in Libya declared the immediate end of their sit-in protest. The Ministry of Education also issued formal directives stating that schools have resumed learning today.

Immediate Economic Impact for Civil Servants

By expediting its implementation of the Libya unified salary scale, the authorities are wisely taking the first steps towards stabilizing its middle class in the midst of rising costs of living in the country. The adoption of the unified salary standard is a guarantee that teachers would continue to provide their services and it can be regarded as an output of successful state reforms that the government is implementing in the country.
