President El-Sisi Declares His Presidential Term Will End in 2030, Calling the Matter ‘Completely Settled’
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has officially said his Sisi presidency ends 2030. In a public address on Saturday, 17 October, President El-Sisi term ends, he made it clear that there were no plans for ongoing speculation to continue to be pursued, regarding possible changes to the Egyptian constitution.
As a President, I have six years left. As President, I have six years to go. This issue is over and done with and will remain as it is,” Sisi assured during his address.
The 71-year-old leader made these definitive statements during a graduation ceremony of new classes of cadets at the Egyptian Military Academy in the New Administrative Capital.
Rejecting Egyptian Constitution Changes – President El-Sisi term ends
Sisi stressed that the country’s basic laws are carefully safeguarded, Al-Ahram state-run newspaper reported. He told participants the constitution “would not be touched” which would eliminate any legislative machinations to extend his tenure in power.
The President has just won re-election for a third successive term in December 2023. According to the State Information Service (SIS), a controversial national referendum in 2019 last a year extended the Egypt presidential term limit from four to six years. It paved the way for his present, last term.
Preparing the Next Generation of Leaders
Sisi affirmed his time line of departure, but mentioned his administration’s focus on transition. The president said he was not going to leave the state until it was overrun by its own people, who are able to take responsibility, according to Reuters.
The Egyptian Military Academy is one of the main training camps for this future class of leaders, he said. Sisi added that the formation of special committees at the state level, to thoroughly train and appoint new cadres for future ministerial, parliamentary and institutional positions, has been done already.
Sisi’s ascent to power in 2013 came after the military removal of Mohamed Morsi, Middle East Eye analysis shows. In his recent official address, he will try to send a message of political stability for the long term, with a clear succession plan.
In addition, on the same Saturday speech, Sisi affirmed Egypt’s regional defense obligations generally. Cairo is ready to take “any measures” needed to protect the security and sovereignty of friendly countries, notably Saudi Arabia, he said.
In the end, the government is turning to institutional transition as the President El-Sisi 2030 is in the final year of his presidency. The administration has made a strategic move to tell local and foreign markets and partners that Egypt’s current constitution is set in stone and the sequence of succession is “completely settled.
