Turkey Signals a New Push to Reunify Libya’s Eastern and Western Administrations
In North Africa, a significant diplomatic breakthrough is taking place. Turkey pushes for Libya reunification in public statement on Saturday, October 24, 2026, as it explicitly calls for the end of the prolonged split between the rival governments in the nation.
Turkey leads Libya reunification push, In the city of Istanbul, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told reporters that the international and domestic conditions have created a “unified Libyan state. The first step is to ensure the permanent administrative convergence of Libya eastern and western administrations, Fidan said.
The need for military integration was crucially underlined by the Turkish government. Fidan said both sides have their own military framework and these military frameworks need to be unified under one national military framework.
Bridging the Political Divide
The assertive course change comes on the heels of months of intensive back-channel diplomacy and intelligence efforts by Turkish officials. In the past Ankara has been a key military backer of the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU), which was opposed by the eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA) led by Commander Khalifa Haftar.
But, the Turkey Libya relations have totally changed in the previous year. Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Ankara is able to facilitate unprecedented dialogue with Eastern authorities.
This diplomatic turnaround had huge payoffs earlier this week. The Libya House of Representatives in the east has unanimously approved an agreement on the maritime boundary between Libya and Turkey, which has caused controversy, the Libya Observer reported. This identical memorandum had been previously dismissed by the eastern parliament, which even years ago had explicitly broken relations with Ankara.
Rebuilding Turkey Libya Relations – Turkey leads Libya reunification push
Ankara has been able to successfully lobby for the ratification of the maritime deal, making the official opposition in Libya’s sole elected national parliament extinct.
Turkey now has unprecedented access to military and political power in the country’s east, and has a well-ensured strategic partnership with the government of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh in Tripoli, according to an analysis by the Middle East Institute.
Fidan also pointed out that Turkey takes a very positive stance on Turkey’s regional tensions caused by the maritime deal. Ankara is publicly suggesting trilateral talks with Cairo and Rome to tackle Cairo’s “ongoing worries regarding Mediterranean sovereignty,” Al-Monitor reports.
In conclusion, as Turkey is pressing for Libya reunification, it is also trying to assert itself as the key power broker that can help bring an end to Libya’s decade-long civil war. If the diplomatic drive succeeds in bringing the eastern and western administrations of Libya together, it will have a dramatic impact on the geopolitical dynamics of the whole Eastern Mediterranean region.
