Egypt Interest Rate Hike: CBE Pushes Deposit Rate to 20 Percent and Lending to 21%
The central bank of Egypt has carried out a large, unexpected adjustment in policy this week which it is trying to use to firmly support the country’s economic stability. Egypt interest rate hike, The Central Bank of Egypt (ECB) has officially raised the Egypt interest rate hike by 100 bps to 23%.
This was made official after the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in October. State financial planners decided that action had to be taken at once to prevent the inflationary pressures that had been building up as a result of the uncertain external market.
This comes after thorough coverage by Ahram Online that indicated a radical change from the past few months, in which the Federal Bank had appeared more lenient in its attitude towards domestic price stability. Many analysts had been predicting the central bank would leave rates unchanged at its meeting on Thursday for the sixth straight session.
Unpacking the Rate Changes: Egypt Deposit Rate 20 Percent
The one percent rise has an instant impact on all main corridors of the northern African country. The MPC’s decision was immediately implemented, resulting in the Egypt deposit rate 20 percent coming into effect.
At the same time, borrowing rates have been raised quite a bit. The committee officially raised the overnight lending rate 21 percent directly affecting the structures of corporate and consumer loans across the country.
The Central Bank of Egypt’s official publications also revealed that the rate of the main operation of the Central Bank of Egypt as well as the discount rate in general were raised by 100 basis points, to 20.5 percent.
The unexpected rise shook some local financial markets, with analysts at the market research firm Trading Economics saying it had “surprised some sectors” of the local financial sector and caused a “rapid rebalancing” of investors on the balance between easing inflation and keeping domestic growth going.
Targeting Egypt Inflation Amid Global Uncertainty – Egypt interest rate hike
The main reason for this precipitous move up in Egypt interest rate hike is the global economic instability.
The MPC’s October decision was clearly linked to “unfavorable global economic conditions and heightened uncertainty,” EgyptToday reports. There are also geopolitical tensions in the wider Middle East that have added significant inflation risks to supply chains, making forecasts of domestic inflation much more upbeat than they were previously.
The Central Bank of Egypt is targeting to gradually slow down all forms of spending at home by raising the price of borrowing. The central bank said that this action is only to bring down consumer inflation expectations and safeguard the overall disinflation trend in the economy.
In sum, this unexpected Egypt interest rate raise is a reflection of the government’s priority of macroeconomic stability. The state planners have taken a firm decision to increase the rate on the Egypt deposit by 20 percent and the overnight lending rate by 21 percent, implying that they are more interested in maintaining price stability over the long term than easing the short-term market.
