Iraq Raises Travellers’ Dollar Allowance to $3,000: Who Qualifies and When Does the New Limit Apply?
The Government of Iraq have finally made the much-anticipated changes to the distribution of foreign currency. Iraq travellers dollar allowance, The Central Bank of Iraq on Monday said it will enable legal citizens to get foreign currency of up to $3,000 in cash when traveling abroad.
This is an extra allowance for travellers dollars that has been changed in Iraq, which was a previous hike in access to foreign currency. The CBI in July 2026 had drastically reduced the traveler quota from $3,000 per month to $2,000, in a strong measure to combat the black market currency speculation.
The formal announcement comes after a weekend of a lot of financial speculation, according to comprehensive market coverage by Shafaq News. A bogus post on social media that the limit was increased to $3,500 was shared Sunday. The CBI was quick to fend off such rumors and on Monday issued its own official order to set the cap at $3000.
Who Qualifies for the $3,000 Limit? – Iraq travellers dollar allowance
To avail the new foreign currency cash limit, tourists need to comply with stringent banking conditions. The 15% allowance is only valid for adult Iraqi citizens who will be leaving from the approved airports.
Citizens will have to register in advance their travel details in the financial portals provided. Most importantly, they are able to take out these funds only at the official exchange rate, Iraq, and the rate at which these funds are being withdrawn is very low and subsidised from the black market.
New rules, put in place in mid-October, said that travellers would only be able to get access to their quota every fortnight. Financial authorities have said this monitoring system will continue in order to ensure that people don’t make a quick buck by selling the subsidized dollars locally.
Implementing the Iraqi Currency Regulations
This policy has not been rolled out smoothly in all schools yet as it will be from 3rd November. The Insight International reported that the CBI’s order has led to some operational conflicts in the Kurdistan Region.
The central bank has recently stopped selling official rate dollars to travellers at Erbil and Jalal Talabani airports, the director of Erbil International Airport said on Monday. Regional travellers are not sure yet whether they will be able to avail of the dollar exchange services at the airport as the CBI has yet to respond to formal requests from the airport administration.
The CBI considers the distribution of the travellers’ dollar allowance of the Iraqis as a pivotal point in order to stabilize the Iraqi economy. The decision to increase the quota to the $3,000 cap is being made by the state planners to bring it closer to international banking standards and create trust.
In the end, the change in the Iraqi currency rules is meant to allow people to pay for legitimate travel costs without giving rise to the “parallel currency market” that is so profitable for Iraqis. People arriving at the airport on this week, who wish to travel, are urged to check with their respective banks before they get to the airport to ensure that they are eligible to travel.
