Breaking: US Becomes Morocco’s Largest Petroleum Supplier, Overtaking Russia and Spain
The United States has reoriented energy supplies for North Africa, and is the top supplier of petroleum for the first three quarters of 2026.
Morocco petroleum supplier, American energy companies have quickly built up their presence in the Middle East region, according to shipping and commodities data consolidated. US petroleum exports to Morocco in the 9-month period from January to September 2026 increased by over 140 percent. Deliveries increased from an average of 25,000 barrels a day (bpd) to 61,000 bpd.
This is a big boost of American fuel, and the US overtakes Russia and Spain as the kingdom’s biggest source of refined petroleum.
Trade volumes had fluctuated and were confirmed by leading trade tracking companies Kpler and Vortexa, as well as by the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) market data. The numbers point to a quick diversification plan, run by the Moroccan Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development.
Changing Tides in Moroccan Seaborne Oil Imports
The entire supplier network saw major changes, with the United States taking the lead. Russia was the second biggest supplier, averaging 50,000 bpd, an increase of 28 percent from the previous year.
On the other hand, the market share of Spain decreased markedly, a country that was a great exporter of fuel to its neighbor in the south. Petroleum exports to Morocco dropped 21 percent to 35,000 bpd, completely from Spain.
Other European and Middle Eastern suppliers also thrived off the kingdom’s hunger for energy. This proved to be successful for Turkey, with its daily deliveries increasing from 10,000 to 22,000 barrels. The petroleum supplies in the Netherlands, meanwhile, saw a huge fivefold jump to 20,000 barrels per day in the same nine-month period.
Overall, Moroccan seaborne oil imports witnessed steady, measurable growth. Between January and September 2026, the country’s average of imported maritime petroleum products was 271,000 bpd. This is up 9 per cent from 249,000 bpd recorded in the same period last year.

Import volumes have been variable throughout the year, and this has led energy analysts to attribute the varying volumes to the need for domestic energy stock. The maximum volume for shipments was reached at 349,000 barrels per day in March; as expected, shipments naturally decreased to 253,000 barrels per day in September.
The new supremacy of American fuel in Moroccan ports highlights a key turning point in the international oil supply chain. With changing regulations and geopolitical challenges in Europe, US refiners have come to the rescue to assure energy security for important North African allies.
