Sudan Proposes Red Sea Free Economic Zone During Moscow Talks and Launches Expat Remittance Drive
During high-level talks with Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, in Moscow on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Sudan proposes a free Red Sea economic zone in a great geopolitical and economic move. The strategic offer is intended to promote bilateral trade and gain key international support for Khartoum.
At the same time, authorities in Khartoum have declared a major initiative for repatriation of Sudanese expats to bring in foreign currency to boost the languishing national economy.
Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan offered Kremlin a “full package” of economic offers, the official Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan said. The maritime zone would be a strategic logistical asset for Moscow, enabling Russia to build big storage centres for fuel and wheat on the coast of Africa.
The Sudanese delegation pointed out during the Sudan Russia Moscow talks that the coastal project may make the region a big hub for Africa’s supply.
Unlocking Russian Investment in Sudan – Red Sea economic zone
Outside the maritime port, Burhan pointed out the “rich possibilities” for Russian investments in Sudan. The Sudanese government offered several mining operations ready to develop to the Russian companies, which will have direct access to process gold, copper and other minerals.
The proposed economic cooperation has a deep impact on the national infrastructure as reported by Sudan Tribune. The Sudanese delegation welcomed Russian state companies to join in the expansion of the Sudanese national railway line from Port Sudan to Chad and establish a huge trans-African logistics corridor.
Burhan told Russian authorities that Sudan still has complete control over these resources in his meeting with them. He told Putin that Khartoum will not be dictated to and is totally ready to implement these long-term cooperation.
The Russian government showed great interest. Radio Tamazuj reported the bilateral trade between the two countries more than doubled last year. In early 2026, the Russian officials confirmed the further 25 percent growth in the economic relations, indicating the fast-growing economic relationship.
The Launch of the Sudan Expat Remittance Drive
Meanwhile, the Central Bank of Sudan is working to ease inflation in the country while the leadership is building international partnerships overseas. The state financial planners officially kicked off the Sudan expat remittance drive today.
The war has severely drained the nation’s foreign exchange assets, leading to a huge humanitarian and economic crisis. In an attempt to counter this, the Sudanese government is offering very competitive exchange rates, and lowering transfer fees to encourage Sudanese expatriates to remittit through the official government transfer system instead of the parallel black market.
According to Al Jazeera’s financial analysts, these diaspora funds are much needed to import needed fuel, food staples and medical supplies – and it’s essential to capture those funds.
The World Bank estimates remittance transfers have been an important lifeline for Sudanese households over the years. The government is trying to formalize these inflows so that it can immediately move millions of dollars into the formal banking system, which would help stop the depreciation of the national currency, it has said.
In the end, both of these programs are an attempt to save their nation’s economy. At the same time as Sudan offers a Red Sea free economic zone in order to attract foreign capital for infrastructure investment, the Sudan expat remittance drive is meant to bring short-term relief to the grassroots. These actions are part of Uganda’s strategy, along with others, to deal with the crushing economic impact of its own internal war.
