Iran abducts former Ahwaz leader in Turkey

Iran

There were reports of an Iranian opposition leader being abducted a few days ago and the Iranian lawmaker conimed the reports on Sunday saying that the opposition leader has been arrested abroad and taken to Tehran.

Former leader of the sepratist group the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahwaz (ASMLA) accused the Iranian government of abducting the leader while he was in Turkey. In a statement given to the media on Friday, ASMLA said that Habib Chaab – also known as Habib Eseywed was arrested after Iranian intelligence unit lured him into coming to Turkey.

There are reports that the leader has been taken to Tehran where a whole intelligence unit is interrogating him. The interrogation is being done in presence of various Iranian officials including head of the Iranian parliament’s national security and foreign policy committee Mojtaba Zolnour as confirmed by the parliament’s website ICANA.

Ruhollah Zam, an Iranian journalist turned activist was arrested in 2019 and was sentenced to death, talked to the media and revealed the necessary information saying that “After the necessary information is extracted from this terrorist, he will appear in a fair court [hearing] to be punished for his actions.”

ASMLA stands against the state of Iran and is considered as a terrorist organisation by the country. The organization demands a separate state for the indigenous Ahwazi Arab population and demands Iran’s oil-rich southwestern Khuzestan province to be included in it, with its capital city of Ahwaz. The minority community demanded equal rights after several atrocities were committed against them in the 20’s. The community is often subjected to mistreatment and is deprived of a proper living standard because of their identity.

Three years ago, the founder of the Liberation of Ahwaz organisation, Ahmad Mola Nissi was shot dead in the Netherlands causing an uproar among the community. Just a year later, Iran accused the group for the attack on the military parade in 2017 that shook Iran and caused the death of 25 military personnels.
