In theatres now is “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”

There are enormous expectations whenever a movie is made based on a beloved story, whether it be a game or a book. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is no exception. The tabletop roleplaying game counterpart had some big shoes to fill when it came to the fantasy epic, which was brought to life by directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. The movie made $38.5 million domestically in its first weekend and $33 million internationally, or 83% of its planned international rollout. This brings the film’s overall box office total to $71.5 million.

Overall, the movie did better than expected in the Midwest, the West, and Canada. In addition to its regular theatrical release, Honor Among Thieves also attracted audiences in the days leading up to this weekend through several exclusive fan preview screenings, which probably helped to boost the overall. The strategic early screenings garnered raving reviews from audiences and critics alike, earning an impressive A- CinemaScore.

The movie makes an impression on viewers

The audience’s voice is especially important because game adaptations for movies have a troubled past. The story revolves around a charming thief and his unaware companions on an illustrious quest for a long-lost relic. It has generally been praised for capturing the essence of the game. If there was any question about how well it has been received, Rotten Tomatoes’ Certified Fresh designation quickly dispels it. The movie did not disappoint ardent fans as it received an exceptional 93% from viewers and a 91% rating overall on the Tomatometer.

Despite the encouraging numbers, Honor Among Thieves’ situation still appears precarious given its enormous $150 million budget. It does, however, have the support of an all-star cast, which includes actors like Chris Pine, Regé-Jean Page, and Michelle Rodriguez, which should only increase audiences’ interest in the film. In addition, the film may advance and surpass its hefty production budget due to a combination of its strong opening weekend, positive audience and critic reviews, and upcoming spring holidays. If it does, Honor Among Thieves might become one of the select few video game adaptations to be a success and end an otherwise extremely depressing cycle.
