Egypt Secures Major New Partnership with WifOR and Roche to Expand Health Economics Research
Egypt is taking a bold step to change the way it calculates national value of public health care provision. The government announced Egypt WifOR Roche partnership, the world’s first comprehensive information system on the socio-economic aspects of health in Egypt, to transform national health policies.
Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, the Egyptian Minister of Health and Population, completed the cooperative framework in high-level talks at World Health Summit in Berlin. He had direct contact with delegations of the German independent economic research firm WifOR Institute and the Swiss global healthcare leader Roche.
The talks were successful in setting up a framework for a collaborative effort to measure the impact of targeted medical interventions at a wider socio-economic level, according to official briefings released by the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population. The main aim is to increase the breadth of the current research and to encompass a broader set of national health priorities.
Integrating Healthcare Policies with Economic Development Indicators
National health spending has traditionally been considered by the regional governments as an expense or operating cost. This new expanded Egypt WifOR Roche partnership aims to change that outdated paradigm, to a new one 100%!
With active promotion of data-based health economics research in Egypt, policy-makers are now able to directly measure the impact of better outcomes on key economic development indicators. The alliance is dedicated to measuring the direct impact of health improvements on increasing workforce participation, improving workforce productivity, and supporting long-term human-capital development.
WifOR Institute will provide the essential empirical evidence and advanced economic modeling capabilities needed for the state to make a thorough assessment of medical services. At the same time, Roche is going to be bringing its vast clinical experience to bear on assisting the government to determine which medical innovations offer the greatest return on investment for vulnerable patients as well as the broader workforce.
Advancing the “Societal Value of Health” Initiative
This new strategic alliance directly develops on the success of the ongoing “Societal Value of Health” initiative in Egypt. The Berlin meetings had discussed the latest developments of this transformative national program, ministry spokesperson Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said.
In particular, the delegations discussed the results of two recent studies that were considered as a basis. These collaborative research initiatives have been able to measure the overarching social and economic costs and benefits of innovative therapies for early HER2+ breast cancer and for diabetic retinopathy.
Research models have been designed within in depth framework which considers macro, micro and meso impacts for the true value creation of specialised health interventions. The research findings could be seen as a resounding endorsement of the advantages of new medicines beyond their clinical health impacts.
Appropriate medical management can greatly increase a patient’s potential to stay in or to get back to work relatively quickly. Moreover, early treatment results in huge savings in the social and economic costs traditionally attributed to chronic, debilitating diseases.
A Data-Driven Future Secured at the World Health Summit
The trilateral alliance’s acquisition at the World Health Summit reflects Cairo’s continued dedication to matching its infrastructure with a rigorous healthcare regime on a worldwide scale. The summit serves as a top global platform and is an ideal place for an agreement on sustainable medical financing to be concluded.
The partners have already determined the next steps for them. The next step in cooperation involves outlining common health priorities, harmonisation of new research methods and setting strict requirements for data sharing, reports Daily News Egypt.
The state enhances linkages between all relevant public and private institutions, which will guarantee that decisions on policymaking and healthcare procurement will be made with hard scientific evidence. Officials are working to establish a centralized process to track these health investments that are being made continuously to ensure they are executed.
Finally, this strategic partnership brings health economics research in Egypt from theory to practice. The Egyptian government has now officially joined forces with WifOR and Roche, giving them access to the latest tools necessary to demonstrate that investments in human health are the most effective investments that can build long-term economic resilience in a nation.
