EU Pledges €5 Million in Aid for Displaced Syrians Amid Middle East Crisis
The European Commission raised an extra €5 million to meet the most pressing humanitarian needs of those fleeing to Syria due to the continuous escalation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, which caused widespread population displacement and crossings from Lebanon to Syria.
In order to help refugees and host communities to meet their immediate needs such as food aid, health care and protection, the new allocation intends to increase humanitarian assistance for both Syrians and Lebanese.
To guarantee that important relief reaches those arriving swiftly the aid will be distributed through EU humanitarian partners actively addressing the Syrian displacement situation.
“The EU is deeply concerned about the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of intensifying hostilities in Lebanon as these are already unfolding in Syria. De-escalation at regional level and continued international support are more crucial than ever to ensure civilians do not pay the toll of war. As we scale up assistance for those forcibly displaced, we call for the respect of international humanitarian law and protection of civilians who continue to be the most affected by violence,” stated by the Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič.
