Houthi Drone Near Mecca – Why This Latest Event Could Be A New Security Flashpoint for Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia stated that it has shot down a Houthi drone near Mecca in southern Saudi Arabia on September 15, 2020, just hours before it was set to enter Mecca’s restricted airspace. The latest development in Yemen’s civil war has raised tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi movement, as Saudi Arabia said that the security of Mecca cannot be compromised because it is a “red line” in the game.
The event comes amid increasing Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia and an expansion of the battleground to Yemen’s coast on the Red Sea.
What Occurred in the Vicinity of Mecca? – Houthi drone near Mecca
Based on the account of Saudi-led coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Malki, Saudi air defenses shot down the drone before it entered the airspace above Mecca that is off-limits to flights over holy sites. There were no reports of damage to the Grand Mosque or any other holy sites from Saudi authorities.
Security alerts were raised in Mecca, Jeddah, and Taif as a result of this event. Al-Malki declared that the security of the two holy mosques and the pilgrims would be regarded as a “red line” and that Saudi Arabia will take necessary steps in response to any threats.
The Houthis dismissed the claims made by the Saudis regarding this attack and claimed they had never targeted Mecca or any Islamic holy site. This makes the intention behind this drone attack unclear.
Why This Incident at Mecca Matters
Saudi officials stated that this event is the second Houthi attack at Mecca after an alleged missile attack in 2017 aimed at Mecca. The Houthis have dismissed similar accusations previously.
It is not only the military aspect of the new event that is significant. Mecca houses the Kaaba and is visited by millions of Muslim pilgrims annually. In this way, any proven attack against the city may imply serious repercussions throughout the entire Muslim world.
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation has denounced the attack, and countries such as Pakistan have demonstrated their support for Saudi security.
Yemen’s Red Sea Coast Posing Additional Threat
The attack against Saudi Arabia has occurred within the broader Houthi operation, which puts additional pressure on Saudi Arabia and the Red Sea.
The Houthis have taken control of large areas of Yemen’s western coast, some of which are located near the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait that links the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The recent gains made by the Houthis and their attacks have raised fears regarding the safety of the ships transiting the strait.
This matter is especially relevant for Saudi Arabia in view of the fact that the disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have already necessitated changes in the energy flow in the region, while attacks against Saudi Arabia have made the country’s task of transporting oil more difficult.

The recent development has occurred amidst a time when there has been a resurgence of Houthi attacks after years of quietness between the Saudi Arabia and Yemen border regions. The ceasefire that was achieved under the mediation of the UN in 2022 considerably reduced the cross-border attacks without bringing about a lasting political solution.
The current fighting is happening within a much bigger picture of the region that involves the conflict between Iran and the disruption of important shipping lines in the Middle East region.
