Iran Open to Sending Troops to Syria Amid Rebel Offensive
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that Tehran would consider deploying troops to Syria if requested by the Syrian government. In an excerpt from an interview shared on his official Telegram channel, Araghchi stated, “If the Syrian government asks us to send forces to Syria, we will study their request.”
Iran has supported Syria by providing military advice for its armed forces. Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed that these advisors remain in Syria and they will continue their work based on needs of Damascus.
The rebel offensive in northern Syria has been described by Iranian officials as a destabilization effort driven by U.S. and Israeli interests. Iranian military leaders including General Mohammad Bagheri have labeled the situation a regional threat. They held talks with Syrian, Iraqi, and Russian counterparts to discuss collective measures in support of the Syrian army.
The developments underscore deep involvement of Iran in the geopolitics.
