Iraq Drone Strike: Two Drones Attack Locations Near Erbil, Causing Fire amid Investigation

Iraq Drone Strike, Two drones were reported to have attacked targets near the city of Soran in Iraq’s Erbil Province on Thursday, August 27, causing an explosion and grassfire near the Badilyan area.
The latest security incident in Iraq’s Kurdish regions comes amid increased attacks by drones and missiles against security bases, energy facilities and other targets within the region in recent months.
According to local sources, there were no casualties reported following the explosion, and the fire was controlled by civil defense and locals at the scene. However, no group claimed responsibility for the incident.
What Happened in Soran?
The incident took place in proximity to Badilyan village in Soran in Erbil governorate in the night.
From local sources, it is known that an object believed to be a drone crashed near the village, with the resultant explosion that echoed all over some parts of Soran. As a result of the explosion, a fire was set up in the meadow about one kilometer away from any population centre.
Separately, Anadolu Agency reported that there were two drones involved and an explosion followed by a fire occurred in proximity to the Badliyan area. At the same time, information about the targets was not available.
Local civil defence forces, along with local inhabitants, managed to extinguish the fire before it could spread further.
Casualties?
No casualties were reported after the incident.
At the same time, there were no initial reports about any major destruction.
In view of this fact, the immediate effect seems minimal, but the incident is important because it occurred in the area that has been constantly subjected to drone and missile strikes.
Up to now, the authorities of the Kurdistan Region did not name the object or announce the authorship.
What Group Is Behind the Iraq Drone Strike Attack?
None of the groups have officially taken credit for the attack.
Moreover, the launch location of the drones, the target of the suspected drones, and their operator remain unknown to date.
For this reason, at this stage, it is too early to say who is behind the drone attack.
This information is especially crucial since the Kurdistan Region has experienced attacks from different groups as a result of growing regional tensions.
To clarify responsibility, investigators will have to identify the type of drones used in the attacks and analyze the debris of the drones, their flight trajectory, and target.
Attack Occurs Days after August 17 Drone Attack
The current drone attack follows the drone attack on August 17.
The August 17 drone attack occurred in the Erbil area when two drones carrying explosives attacked the office of Kurdistan Region’s Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and the residence of the head of the Kurdistan Intelligence Agency Parastin.
In that attack, nobody was hurt.
After the attack, the Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi formed an investigation committee to determine what happened.
This was stated by the Kurdistan Region’s Counter-Terrorism Directorate, and Barzani held Iran responsible for the attack, saying that it was a dangerous escalation that constituted a threat to the security of the region.
Why Drone Attacks Are Causing Worry in Kurdistan
The most recent attack is not an isolated one, as it has been happening within the context of a broader trend of attacks using drones and missiles in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.
Reports have stated that attacks on facilities in terms of security and energy, diplomatic sites, civilian areas, and camps of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups have taken place.
The recurrent use of drones has led to the importance of this weapon becoming more critical from a security perspective.
This is because drones could be somewhat hard to detect, and they could be used to carry out attacks without putting the operators at risk, as would happen in a traditional attack.
