Iraq’s Industrial Potential Grows with Two Large Projects in Basra

Iraq began its largest industrial project initiatives in Basra on May 14, 2025, under the direction of Minister of Industry Khalid Battal Al-Najm, as part of strengthening Iraq’s industrial base in order to provide local jobs.
The first project is Iraq’s largest chlorine and caustic soda plant at the General Company for Petrochemical Industries. This new plant will utilize environmentally friendly technology to produce valuable chemical products such as caustic soda, liquid chlorine, hydrochloric acid, and sodium hypochlorite needed in the oil, industrial, and water treatment industry sectors.
In conjunction with this initiative, Iraq also started Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar Industrial City—the first industrial city in the region. Together with China’s Tsingshan Industrial, the two are developing the 2,000-dunam site, focused on iron, steel, and construction materials, with modern infrastructure to allow for expansion of industrial activity into the future
Minister Al-Najm said that these initiatives will help Iraq in building integrated industrial zones in the future, and will be a pathway to encouraging local industrial production, as well as international and local investment. These initiatives will show what is possible when Iraq and China work together, and will positively impact the country becoming more robust and less dependent on oil in the future.
