Israel blocks humanitarian aid into Gaza as ceasefire negotiations turn complicated
Israel blocked the entry of humanitarian aid trucks into Gaza on Sunday as a standoff in relation to the ceasefire agreement that has halted fighting in the territory for the past one-and-a-half months escalated. Hamas is calling on Egypt and Qatar to step in.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office recently said that it had adopted a proposal by a US delegate for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza for the holy month of Ramadan, hours after the first phase of the ceasefire agreed last month expired.
If agreed, the ceasefire is going to halt fighting for multiple days. But the deal is going to be conditional on Hamas releasing half of the hostages on the first day and the remaining at the conclusion, if an agreement is reached on a permanent ceasefire.
But Hamas has stressed that it is committed to the originally agreed truce that had been scheduled to embrace the second phase, amid negotiations aimed at a permanent end to the conflict, and it has rejected the idea of a temporary extension to the 42-day truce.
