Israel Secures Mount Sheikh in Syria, Marking a Shift in Golan Heights Control

According to the reports Israeli troops have crossed into Syrian territory via the Golan Heights. This is a big development in the region as it can enhance the tensons. Israel forces had crossed the border for the first time since 1973.

According to regional news sources and X accounts reports, Israeli forces moved into the demilitarized zone of the Golan Heights after launching airstrikes earlier this week on Syrian military sites. These sites including chemical weapons stockpiles, Russian air defense systems, and Scud missiles were targeted due to concerns that they could be used by Syrian opposition forces.

Yesterday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the army to secure parts of the demilitarized zone including Mount Sheikh on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights. This move of Israel highlights focus of Israel on maintaining security during the conflicts in Syria.

Israel has controlled the Golan Heights since 1967. In 1974, a ceasefire agreement set up a demilitarized zone between Israel and Syria. The recent actions by the Israel in shows a significant change in this long-standing border issue.
