Israel Targets ‘Infrastructure’ on Syria-Lebanon Border in Air Strikes
Late Friday the Israeli military carried out air raids hitting ‘infrastructure’ in the region near the Syrian-Lebanese border in the area of Janta. Hezbollah cited the attack as an operation targeting arms supply channels that were within the group’s reach, as announced by an official body. The military said: “The IAF struck infrastructure used to smuggle weapons through Syria to the Hezbollah terrorist organization in Lebanon.” But it has never been clear whether these strikes were in the Syrian territory or Lebanese territory.
Rising Tensions Along the Border
The strikes came in succession after Lebanon’s army complained that Israel had violated the ceasefire agreement by bombing southern communities. The said area of Janta does not have legal border checkpoints and has increased its activities including arms dealing. UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon warned of the continuing destruction of the place due to Israeli operations and expressed concern that the situation could worsen in the region.
The Israeli military claimed that its activities were meant to stop the arming of Hezbollah. This comes after a year of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah who signed for a ceasefire on the 27th of November. It provided a brief relief after the basic humanitarian pause when Israel stepped up its aggression after assaults sponsored by Hezbollah during the Gaza war while launching bombings and ground operations.
Preventing Weapons Smuggling
Israel’s military also said it would eliminate the threats, arguing that these strikes are part of a long-term strategy to limit Hezbollah’s capacity to restore the weapons smuggling networks. “The IDF will continue to act by the ceasefire to safeguard the state of Israel against new threats,” it underlined.
The most recent bombings have illustrated that the current cease-fire is quite unstable while the nucleolus of instability in the region persists. Even though there is no fighting, troops are still prepared and alert and Israel has stepped up efforts to contain what it deems threats from Hezbollah.
