Jordan Set to Accelerate Transition to Green Transport
In its transition to green transport, Jordan is exploring e-mobility to support its national goals to reduce greenhouse emissions by 31 percent by 2030. The kingdom has recognized the importance of embracing renewable energy sources to secure a more sustainable future.
Jordan has invested in solar power plants, and wind farms, diversified its energy sources and paved the way for a more sustainable future. Sustainability is one of the key pillars of its Economic Modernization Vision which was launched in 2022.
And now the kingdom has launched the first High-Level Forum on E-Mobility as part of the “Integrated adoption of electric mobility in Jordan” project. This is overseen by the Ministry of Environment, and funded by the Global Environment Facility, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the Global Green Growth Institute.
Jordan Strives for E-Mobility
Amani Azzam, the Secretary-General of Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, stressed the importance of effective collaborations between all relevant entities in the public and private sector to achieve national e-mobility goals.
She said promoting e-mobility aligns with the goals of the Jordan Energy Strategy 2020-2030. It aims to increase energy efficiency by 9 percent and reduce carbon emissions by 10 percent. “Considering that the transport sector accounts for about 45 percent of energy consumption in Jordan, the transition towards e-mobility will undoubtedly help reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, if it is accompanied with the use of renewable energy to operate charging stations.”
Azzam pointed out that the number of electric vehicles in Jordan nearly reached 48,000 by the end of 2022. This is expected to touch around 90,000 by the end of 2023. She believes it’s necessary to take proactive measures to address the expected increase in electricity demand on power grids in Jordan, owing to the rising popularity of EVs.

Jordan Tackles Emissions
Acknowledging the tacking greenhouse gas emissions is the need of the hour, Jordan is boosting the transition of e-mobility in the kingdom. Osama Karadsheh, Ministry of Transport Secretary-General, said they are very much committed to their environmental responsibilities.
He highlighted that the transport sector generates 28 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. This means that adopting e-mobility will help reduce pollution, improve air quality and contribute to climate change mitigation, as well as save energy costs.
As such, Jordan has numerous projects going on, like the Bus Rapid Transit project between Amman and Zarqa, and the urban transport project between Irbid and Zarqa.
