Kuwait Environmental Society Launches Green Schools Initiative for Sustainable Education
Kuwait Environment Protection Society (KEPS) has taken a significant step towards the enhancement of environmental awareness through the schools. On July 14, 2025, KEPS presented an all-inclusive guide on green schools that was meant to assist schools in Kuwait to achieve improved environmental behaviours and contribute to sustainable development. This green schools project is a big step towards the Kuwait environmental education project.
This new guide was announced as an eventful program at the end of the annual educational awareness program, 14 th annual Green Schools educational awareness program organized by KEPS, and is a landmark of achievement as per the goals of the organization in developing environmental consciousness among students and teachers all over the country.
What is the Green Schools Initiative?
The green schools program in Kuwait is an all-inclusive program that lists schools with the required tools and guidelines to transform the school process into a greener program. According to Wijdan Al-Oqab, who is the Chairperson of KEPS, this guide on green schools provides a comprehensive plan that covers some important areas:
- Waste Management: Under this guide, the guide gives a clear direction as to how schools can better manage their waste, i.e., recycling programs, waste reduction programs.
- Energy Conservation: The schools are advised on how to conserve energy by improving lighting, heating, and cooling activities.
- Water Conservation: The project involves advice and procedures on how to use less water in school establishments.
- Green Spaces: The guide recommends that schools design and maintain green spaces in their settings, including gardens and planted grounds.
Another feature of the green schools program is the start up of school environmental clubs to motivate the students and teachers to be more active in the area of sustainability. These are the clubs, on which the promotion of environmental awareness within the school community is based.
Program Impact and Participation
The green schools project has already demonstrated rather impressive outcomes. Secretary-General of KEPS and Director of Programs and Activities Jenan Bahzad stated that about 2,000 teachers and students of schools all over the country joined this year program. Such a high rate of participation depicts increase in demand of environmental education within Kuwait.
The targeted audiences of the program annually held under the green school concept are mainly the teachers of the both, the government and the private school. They are given the power to disseminate environmental and health awareness among their schools. During the school year, KEPS carried out multiple workshops and lectures in order to promote values of environmental citizenship and public health among schoolchildren.
Topics covered in the green schools program included:
- Environmental analysis and assessment
- Sustainable resource management
- Implementation of Kuwait’s Environmental Protection Law
- Scientific awareness and environmental consciousness
