Moroccan-Led Team Unearths Sijilmassa's Hidden Past

The National Institute of Archeology and Heritage of Morocco has started its largest ever archaeological project at Sijilmassa which established the historic connection between Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa.

The archaeological team under the leadership of heritage specialist Asmae Al-Qasimi has dug through 8,000 square meters during their investigations from the 6th to 18th centuries. Director Abdeljalil Bouzouggar declared the project trailblazing because of its extensive depth and contemporary excavation methods.

Modern excavation methods in Moroccan archaeology are introduced for the first time through the combination of drones and 3D imaging technologies. Recent excavations in Morocco have revealed the original heart of the city and previously unknown archaeological discoveries which could transform current explanations of Moroccan history.
