President Mahmoud Abbas appointed Hussein Al-Sheikh as Vice Chairman of the PLO Executive Committee while also taking the position of Vice President of Palestine. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry officially endorsed this appointment through its Sunday statement.

The appointment creates significant momentum for Palestinian unity while their national purpose passes through a vital era. Al-Sheikh received approval to assume his new position following the Saturday committee meeting, where he had previously held the Secretary-General position of the PLO Executive Committee since 2022.

Minister Badr Abdelatty of Egypt made a personal call to congratulate Al-Sheikh on his ability to safeguard Palestinian rights throughout this essential time. Executive Committee members of the PLO plan to conduct their next meeting on Saturday to choose the new Secretary-General.The new office holds significant political experience thanks to Hussein Al-Sheikh. He entered Ramallah in 1960 and has dedicated his life to Palestinian politics for many decades. The political transformation of his career occurred upon his successful election to the Fatah Central Committee in 2009 followed by another term as member in 2016. The Palestinian cause holds value to Al-Sheikh because he invested 11 years of his life (1978 to 1989) in Israeli prison cells before his release. From 2016 onward he served on the National Dialogue Committee which oversees the Fatah and Hamas faction talks to resolve their complex national reconciliation matters.
