Rafah Crossing Opens, Allowing Sick and Injured Palestinians to Seek Medical Aid in Egypt

In the first border opening since Israel took control of Gaza almost nine months ago, a group of fifty Palestinian children who were ill and injured started traveling to Egypt on Saturday to receive medical care at the Rafah crossing.

Ambulances were seen approaching the Rafah crossing gate, carrying a number of people on stretchers and placing them in ambulances on the Egyptian side.

The ceasefire agreement that Israel and Hamas reached earlier this month is strengthened by the major breakthrough of the reopening of the Rafah crossing. After Hamas freed the final surviving female detainees in Gaza, Israel felt the need to reopen the bridge.

A Palestinian Red Cross ambulance was seen on Egyptian television approaching the crossing gate and a number of youngsters were carried out on the stretchers and placed in ambulances on the Egyptian side.
