saudi arabia calls on muslims to spot dhul hijja crescent moon ahead of eid al adha

The Court asked anyone who saw the crescent, either with the naked eyes or through binoculars, to inform the nearest court and record their testimony.

Muslims in Saudi Arabia have been urged by the Supreme Court to try and spot the crescent on Dhul Hijjah on Thursday evening.

The Court has asked anyone who spots the crescent, either with the naked eye or through binoculars, to inform the nearest court and record their testimony. They can also call the nearest centre, which will direct them to the nearest court.

Dhul Hijjah is the month in which the Hajj takes place and the pilgrimage begins on the 8th of the month and ends on the 12th.

Observations can be done with or without the aid of binoculars. People who see the crescent moon are invited to go to the nearest court and record their testimony.

‘According to the Supreme Court, it is hoped that people who are able to observe the crescent moon will join the committees formed for this purpose in different regions and participate in these efforts, which benefit Muslims,’ the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Crescent moon sightings will then be used to set the date of Eid al-Adha, the tenth day of the Muslim lunar month.

It was reported in the media last month that Saudi Arabia will call on Muslims in the Kingdom to observe the crescent moon on 6 June. Eid al-Adha is scheduled for 16 June. The day of Arafat, which precedes the great Muslim festival, is scheduled a day earlier, on 15 June.

During Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, Muslims pray together, take part in charitable activities and sacrifice an animal, usually a sheep. This is the month of the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, one of the five pillars of Islam.
