TikTok ban: Is the social media platform going dark in the US on January 19?
Social media giant TikTok said on Friday that it is going to go dark for more than 170 million users in the US on January 19, unless President Joe Biden’s administration acts urgently to assure the company that it is not going to be punished for violating certain terms.
Signed by Biden earlier last year, a bipartisan rule requires TikTok to sell to US buyers by Sunday or face a ban in the country. Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court’s speedy decision let the controversial ban on the platform to take hold.
So TikTok could turn itself off in the near future, only to turn itself back on at a later date if President-elect Donald Trump offers the company assurances that it is not going to be punished for violating the ban.
