Israel-Palestine Conflict: Fresh Wave of Violence Engulfs the West Bank

The occupied West Bank has seen one of its worst spates of violence in recent months, West Bank violence, with a deadly clash near Nablus sparking a series of settler attacks, Israeli army raids and mosque burnings across Palestinian towns and villages.
The Spark: A deadly meeting in Tal
The violence started on July 24 when local reports said that about 25 to 30 Israeli settlers attacked the eastern part of the village of Tal, southwest of Nablus, trying to break into homes. Residents came out to meet them, and a gunfight started after a villager grabbed a gun from one of the settlers. The fighting killed four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers and seriously wounded others, including a child caught in a second wave of strikes on the western part of the village about half an hour later.
Military crackdown comes after
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded by ordering a “wide-scale military operation” across the West Bank, which intensified in the days that followed. Israeli forces have since raided more than 20 towns and villages, destroying homes and arresting dozens of Palestinians. Raids reported include Jenin (Beita, Nilin, Arrabeh), and Deir al-Ghusun near Tulkarem. Forces impose strict restrictions on traffic and checkpoints throughout the territory.
Escalating Settler Violence
In addition to the military response, Jewish settlers have become more emboldened, travelling through Palestinian villages, spray-painting threatening graffiti and attacking residents. Perhaps the most alarming incident of the week was the torching of two mosques in one night – Al-Rahma mosque in Qusra and another in the village of Kour – with racist graffiti reading “Jewish revenge” daubed on the buildings. Palestinian officials say settlers vandalised or burned at least 45 mosques across the region in 2025 alone.
A Rising Number of Attacks – West Bank violence
The broader trend is reflected in data from rights monitors. The number of settler attacks increased from 1,291 in 2023 to 1,449 in 2024 and 1,835 in 2025, including 761 in the first four months of 2026 alone a monthly average of 190 attacks, 24 per cent higher than the monthly rate the year before.
International Condemnation Grows
Human Rights Watch has warned that the current escalation could lead to mass atrocities, urging the Israeli government to stop further settler violence instead of allowing reprisals and military action to turn an already volatile situation into something worse. Spain’s government said the Israeli government must reverse settlement expansion policies and stop protecting settler violence against civilians. The attacks on the mosques were termed “pogroms against defenceless communities” by the UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories and “systematic fascist crimes” by a Hamas official.
Israeli officials also sound alarm
It is worth noting that international observers are not the only ones concerned. Senior Israeli military officials told Haaretz the situation in the West Bank was “extremely dangerous and volatile”, and senior army officers were reportedly warning that government policy was “emboldening settler violence”. “The unit was not manned enough to do anything but watch the events unfold,” one reservist officer said. The timing of the crackdown has also been linked to upcoming elections in Israel, with some analysts suggesting the show of force could be partly to shore up support among Netanyahu’s far-right coalition partners.
The situation in the West Bank remains extremely volatile, with curfews imposed, mosques destroyed and settler and military operations continuing across multiple governorates. Rights groups are urging immediate international intervention to stop the situation from deteriorating further, but there is no sign that the military operation or settler attacks are abating.
