Sri Lanka Burns As President Rajapaksa Runs To Maldives
Sri Lanka–As the country burns in turmoil, the President has run for his safety. The obviously defeated leader of Sri Lanka is said to have escaped to Maldives in the wee hours of July 13. Gotabaya Rajapaksa would be rendering his resignation today. But he has left his country caught in the midst of acute food and commodity shortage that has been a result of a collapsing economy.
Mr. Rajapaksa wouldn’t have made it to the Maldives had he not been favoured by the Maldivian Parliament Speaker and former president Mohamed Nasheed. As he held the position of President, he was not arrested for fleeing his country and made full use of his diplomatic immunity. The run is such a drastic contrast to Ukrainian President who continues to hold the helm despite his country being attacked from all fronts.
As per reports, Rajapaksa’s resignation letter would be sent to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena around 8 pm Sri Lanka time. Also, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is will be sworn in as the President of Sri Lanka for a brief period till a new Sri Lankan President is appointed on 20 July.
