Syria : 9 years of war , 380,000 dead and still no solution or peace

The Syrian conflict began On March 15^th, 2011. A conflict that has since turned into a very complex war that has taken hundreds of thousands of lives in nine years. At least 384,000 people have lost their lives in Syria since the conflicts’ beginning, according to a new report released on Saturday by the Syrian Human Rights Observatory. Among them, more than 116,000 civilians were killed, including about 22,000 children and 13,000 women.

The conflict has turned over the years into a complex war triggered by the deadly repression of a peaceful pro-democracy protests, a war involving rebel factions, jihadist groups and foreign powers. As this war enters its tenth year, the Bashar al-Assad regime today controls more than 70% of a fragmented territory, thanks to the military support of its unwavering allies: Russia, Iran, and the Lebanese Hezbollah.

The conflict is the “worst man-made disaster since World War II,” the UN estimated in 2017. It has squeezed the economy and caused more than 11 million people exodus, sometimes pressing at the gates of Europe. According to the new assessment of the Syrian Human Rights Observatory, which relies on a vast network of military and medical sources across Syria, at least 129,476 soldiers of the Syrian army, as well as Syrian and foreign members of militias and allied forces, have been killed since 2011.

The militia members who died included 1,697 Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, the NGO said. Nearly 57,000 rebel faction fighters were also killed. 13,624 Syrian Democratic Forces warriors, a military alliance dominated by the Kurds, spearheading the fight against the Islamic State group (ISIS), according to the Syrian Human Rights Observatory. At least 67,296 ISIS operatives, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a former Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda, and other jihadist groups were also killed, the source said.

The Observatory report includes 421 unidentified victims. A main front remains after the regimes’ successive reconquests: the Idleb region, the last great jihadist and rebel stronghold in northwestern Syria. A Damascus offensive launched in December has caused the displacement of nearly a million people, according to the UN. In early March, Ankara negotiated with Moscow a cease-fire agreement. NGOs condemned the abuses and human rights abuses perpetrated by the regime, accused of deadly chemical attacks, but also of torture and arbitrary arrests. According to the NGOs, tens of thousands of people have been victims of enforced disappearances by the government or by the armed factions. The war has resulted in massive destruction of infrastructure and destroyed many crucial economy sectors, including petroleum.
