As Iran launches missiles and drones into Jordanian airspace, Jordan shooting Iranian missiles, Jordan has found itself in a rather tricky situation where it needs to rely on its own air defence systems and the Jordanian Air Force to defend the kingdom from the aggressor while stating that it does not wish to be involved in the broader US-Iran conflict.
The recent escalation began after the US targeted Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island on August 30. As a result, Iran launched ballistic missiles at the US facilities located in Jordan, according to some reports. The missiles were shot down by Jordanian and US defence systems.
Jordanian efforts to protect its territory from the missile strikes without getting involved in a much larger conflict involving Iran, the US and Israel are becoming ever more complicated.
Why Is Jordan Shooting Down Iranian Missiles?
Jordan has always made it unequivocally clear that it would defend itself against any attack on its territory and airspace, irrespective of who might be firing the weapons at the country.
It is known that before the latest incidents, the Jordanian armed forces said they had intercepted seven missiles and six drones fired from Iran towards Jordan. There were no injuries or material losses in that episode.
These fresh episodes show why the matter is so important to Amman.
Being situated geographically between many conflict zones of the region, Jordan may have its territory and airspace used as a passageway by either Iranian or Israeli missiles. In addition, the Jordanian airbases hosting US military have also become targets.
Therefore, Jordan has to defend itself actively.
Jordan Says It Wants to Stay Out of the Conflict
While showing a military reaction, Jordan has tried to show its intention to stay out of the conflict.
Basically, the message is that Jordan will not allow any military activity through its territory or airspace.
This is a significant difference between neutrality and passivity.
Even though Jordan may not want to be part of any offensive actions against Iran, the country can intercept any missile or drone posing a threat to the territory or violating the airspace.
The security problem that Jordan faces has been increasingly clear during the war. According to experts, there are several advantages that Jordan has in terms of security due to its strategic position relative to the USA. However, such a position also puts Jordan at risk of attack by Iran and its allies.
Why Jordan Has Become a Target – Jordan shooting Iranian missiles
It can be stated that the presence of American troops and facilities has been one of the major factors that have contributed to Jordan’s involvement in the conflict.
On August 30, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran announced that it conducted ballistic missile strikes against two US military bases in Jordan, namely King Hussein and Al Azraq bases.
The Jordanian nation therefore faces the fact that although its government may not be interested in engaging in confrontation with Iran, the US military operations from sites within its borders could make those sites vulnerable to attack.
In this way, Jordan has become increasingly important for regional security.
What Does Jordan’s Air Defense Interception of Missiles Entail?
Interception through the Jordanian air defenses is more to do with protecting the country from any threats.
Missiles and drones intercepted before now have led to their remnants falling across various parts of the nation.
The Arab Center Washington DC has pointed out the broader security challenges posed by missiles entering Jordanian airspace and drones attacking various parts of the nation.
It means that the act of interception does not necessarily negate the challenge.
