Can Egypt’s Wind Farms Lead Carbon Emissions Down by 2.5M Tons?

Egypt will be moving in its renewable energy sector through its two 550 MW wind farms in the Gulf of Suez region, the biggest onshore wind power project in Africa. The OPEC Fund for International Development has endorsed US$ 30 million to the US$ 1 billion issued that has been co-financed by trilateral institutions including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)African Development Bank (AfDB), and British International Investment (BII).

Suez Wind, established by ACWA Power and HAU Energy will invest in the farm with capabilities of 1.1GW collectively. This renewable energy will allow generating electricity for a million plus homes and annually reduce CO2 emissions above 2.5 million tons. The project fits into Egypt’s NWFE program that seeks to hit 10 GW of renewable power by 2028.

OPEC Fund for International Development’s President Abdulhamid Alkhalifa said that based on climate change, partnerships, and cooperation remain instrumental in driving solutions forward and spoke about how Egypt has been a partner of the organization since 1976. This way Egypt not only works toward achieving its goal of green energy but also strengthens its role in the development of a sustainable future.
