The formal memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the launch of the initiative was signed by the Egyptian Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy and the Djibouti’s Trade and Tourism Minister Orbis Helaf Orbis.

The agreement provides for extensive cooperation in the field of tourism between the countries on a bilateral basis. Expanding Heritage and Aviation Links

At the signing ceremony, which was attended by Djibouti’s Ambassador to Cairo, Ahmed Ali Bari, officials agreed to provide knowledge and expertise in the field of restoration of archaeological sites, management of museums and archaeological operations of excavation.

The Egyptian government has also agreed to organize specialized capacity building workshops for the Egyptian personnel in Djibouti to raise the Djiboutian hospitality standards. The general vision is to significantly boost tourist numbers in both directions, said Djiboutian’s Minister Orbis Helaf Orbis. He pointed out that EgyptAir is already flying three flights per week between Cairo and Djibouti, thus having the required aviation infrastructure to facilitate receiving more visitors.

The diplomatic gesture comes as part of Cairo’s efforts to enhance soft-power ties in the region, as part of its geopolitical strategy outlined by Daily News Egypt, which seeks to deepen relations in the Horn of Africa. Djibouti’s strategic location on the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which is the crucial entry point to the Suez canal to Egypt, makes economic co-alignment between the two countries crucial.

The security and mutual prosperity of these waterways go hand in hand for the overall security of sea and tourism in the Red Sea.

In the end, the achievement of this pact of tourism between Egypt and Djibouti would depend on the swift integration of the two countries; there is a need for tangible integration. Both countries are aggressively working on the cities in Sharm El-Sheikh, and Djibouti City twinning, thereby building a strong, competitive front to attract investors from around the world.
